About Me

My name is Emilie Pernet, a PhD student at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris. I am currently working with Stephane Charlot, on spectral modelling of early galaxies integrating binary-star processes.

Research

I am currently working at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris with Dr. Stephane Charlot, in the High energy astrophysics and early Universe group. My PhD project focuses on spectral modelling of early galaxies integrating binary-star processes.

I worked at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias from February 2023 until December 2023, as part of my MPhys course. I worked with Dr. Ignacio Martín-Navarro and Dr. Alina Boeker in the TRACES research group. Together we explored the [α/Fe]-σ relation for massive galaxies, using the state-of-art models and tools of Full Spectral Fitting. We also investigated the impact of variable IMF on the [α/Fe]-σ relation using Full Index Fitting. I had the opportunity to present our work by giving a talk at the "A Life Devoted to Stellar Populations" conference. We also published a letter "[Mg/Fe] and variable initial mass function: Revision of [α/Fe] for massive galaxies" in Astronomy and Astrophysics, https://doi.org/10.1051/0004-6361/202449308.

Education

I recently graduated with an MPhys Nuclear Astrophysics with First Class Honours. I started my degree at the University of Surrey in September 2020 and graduated in June 2024, I also did a research year placement in 2023. Throughout my studies, I had the chance to participate in numerous lab experiments, group projects and computational works, notably, I investigated accretion rates on white dwarfs using MESA and explored the decay of a black hole binary orbit. As part of the Nuclear Astrophysics course, I had various modules, including, in particular: Quantum Physics, Atoms to Lasers, Electromagnetic Waves, Special Relativity, General Relativity, Nuclear Astrophysics, Explosive Stellar Phenomena, Modern Computational Techniques, Research Techniques in Astronomy, Principles of Data Science.

I received “The NPL MPhys prize in Physics” for the best overall MPhys performance at FHEQ Level 7, “The Department of Physics Level 5 Prize” for the best overall performance at Level 5 of the Physics UG Programmes and “The Dr. Chris Sullivan Prize” for the best performing second-year student in Atoms to Lasers.
